Sophomores Win Western League



Sophomores Aubrey Yonemitsu ’26 and Jenna Yablonicky ’26 win the Western League doubles title! 30 doubles teams competed in the tournament. Aubrey and Jenna had decisive wins in their first two matches against Patrick Henry High School teams. In the semifinals, they faced teammates Sophia Cervantes ’24 and Lucy Lonneker ’25. It was a well-played match, and Aubrey and Jenna won in straight sets. 

In the finals, their opponents were two seniors from Academy of Our Lady of Peace. The OLP team got off to a strong start going up 3-0 in the first set, but Aubrey and Jenna battled back to get to a tie breaker. OLP got the early lead in the tie breaker, but once again the sophomores from Cathedral came from behind to win the tie breaker 7-5.

In the second set, OLP got hot again going up 5-2 serving for the set. Aubrey and Jenna saved 4 set points and made an amazing comeback to get the set score to 6-6. This time, Cathedral never let OLP get the lead. They won the tiebreaker 7-3. 

The sophomore duo wasn’t the only success at the tournament. Senior, Irene Torres ’24 placed second in the singles. Freshman, Alanis Huang ’27 was a singles semi-finalist. Maria Gurchumelidze ’26 and Mary Tyson ’24 placed fifth in the doubles tournament.
