Finalists in the Santa Barbara Invitational
Lady Dons tennis had a successful weekend in Santa Barbara – facing tough teams and falling just six games short of the title.
Santa Barbara provided the perfect backdrop with fantastic weather, for a college tour and some team bonding. Not to mention the incredible tennis.
First round, the Lady Dons faced Foothill Tech (Ventura). The Dons secured a decisive win 6-0.
In the semi-finals, Garces Memorial (Bakersfield) was a challenge. The Dons strength in doubles got the team to an early lead 3-0. When singles took the court, the battle continued. All three singles matches were in a close contest, until #1 singles player Irene Torres came back from a set down to win her match and secure the overall victory for the team. Final score 4-2.

The finals was another hard fought battle. The Dons faced St. Ignatius from San Francisco. Dons were up 2-1 after the doubles matches. St. Ignatius responded winning two of the three singles matches, leaving the match in an overall tie 3-3. The tournament format called for a tie-breaker to count individual games. St. Ignatius came out on top 56-50 in the game count.
“I’m so proud of our team – those are the kinds of battles we want. I know this experience will help them grow as players and a team.” – Coach Millie Yablonicky
