HSSA Scholar Athletes: Kyla O’Donnell and Colin McPhail
Cathedral Catholic High School is proud to recognize seniors Kyla O’Donnell and Colin McPhail as recipients of the High School Sports Association (HSSA) Scholar Athlete of the Year award. This prestigious honor celebrates student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional achievement in both academics and athletics.
O’Donnell, a standout in soccer and track and field, has compiled an impressive 4.6 GPA while excelling in multiple sports. She was named the Western League Goalkeeper of the Year in soccer and earned Western League Field Athlete of the Year honors in track and field in 2025. A four-time Western League track champion, she has also been recognized on the City Conference All-Academic Team. O’Donnell remains undecided about college.
McPhail, who also carries a 4.6 GPA, has distinguished himself as a leader in both water polo and swimming. He was named the 2025 Western League Player of the Year in water polo and earned First Team All-CIF honors in both 2024 and 2025. A key contributor to back-to-back CIF Open Division championship teams in 2023 and 2024, McPhail has been instrumental in the continued success of Cathedral Catholic’s water polo program. He will attend the United States Naval Academy to continue his athletic and academic journey.
Both student-athletes were honored at Monday’s HSSA banquet alongside Cathedral Catholic Athletic Directors Noah Stevens and Colette Reid.
