Cathedral Catholic cross country continued its strong start to the season Friday at the River Park Invitational, with Grace Keefe ‘27 leading the way in another standout performance.

Keefe won the individual race in 17:12.90, securing her third straight invitational title. She also set a new River Park Invitational meet record, adding to an already impressive start to her season. Adding to an already memorable weekend, Keefe was also named the August San Diego Sports Association Star of the Month. She will be recognized alongside the other monthly Stars at the next Salute to the Champions.

The Cathedral girls backed up Keefe’s individual win with a dominant team performance. Despite competing without two of their top four runners, the Dons easily captured the team title, securing their third consecutive invitational championship.

Cathedral put five runners in the top 13, led by Keefe’s first-place finish and a third-place performance from Callie Schulteis, who crossed the line in 17:58.33. Eva Smith finished seventh in 18:38.93, followed by Emma Sandberg in 11th at 19:12.58 and Sienna Struyck in 13th at 19:17.05. With five runners finishing in the top 13, the Dons once again demonstrated the depth that has fueled their early-season success.

The Cathedral boys also delivered a strong performance, finishing second overall in the team competition. Freshman Lukas Derheimer continued his impressive start to the season, placing third individually in 14:57.13. Derheimer was followed by Caleb Reid in 15:43.10, Makana Gibbons in 15:50.78, Zac Albers in 16:00.29, and Quinn McGivern in 16:02.68, rounding out the Dons’ scoring five.

Both Cathedral teams will face their biggest test of the young season this Saturday at the 45th Annual Woodbridge Classic at Great Park in Irvine. The prestigious meet brings together top teams and individual runners from across multiple states and consistently features many of the nation’s highest-ranked programs and athletes, including those from California.

After three invitational team titles for the girls and another strong showing from the boys, the Dons will head to Woodbridge ready for their next challenge.
