UConn-bound star is just 13th player from San Diego Section to be named to the game
Isuneh “Ice” Brady, the 6-foot-4 senior center at Cathedral Catholic, became the 13th player — seventh girl — in the history of the San Diego Section to be named to play in the McDonald’s All-American Basketball Game when the teams were announced Tuesday, Jan. 25.
“I’m more than a little excited,” Brady said. “I pay attention to who gets named to the game, but today’s announcement snuck up on me. We were at lunch as a team when the announcement came down, so I was little surprised. Really, this is awesome.”
Brady joins Brandon McCoy, who played in the 2017 boys game, as the only players from Cathedral Catholic to be named a McDonald’s All-American.
“I’m very aware of the players from San Diego who have been in the game,” Brady said. “I’m in some great company, for sure. … I’m very proud to represent San Diego, very proud to represent Cathedral Catholic.”
The games, played in an East vs. West format, will be March 29 in Chicago and feature 12-player teams for each side — a total of 48 players from across the nation.
The girls play at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The boys play at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
Brady, who has signed to play at UConn, is the driving force behind Cathedral Catholic’s success.
The Dons are 13-3 this season and ranked No. 2 in San Diego and No. 7 in the state. Cathedral Catholic recently played in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., beating Springfield Central 72-31.
After the game, the Dons went to a UConn game.
“That was a great experience, something I could share with my teammates,” Brady said.
Brady is averaging 19.3 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists this season. The Dons are 80-26 in Brady’s four years on the varsity.
