Dons Shine on California’s Biggest Stage at CIF State Championships

Three Cathedral Catholic student-athletes capped off outstanding seasons by competing against the state’s best at the CIF State Track & Field Championships in Fresno, highlighted by a school-record performance by junior Grace Keefe.

Keefe continued her remarkable distance-running season, specifically in the 1600m at the state meet, delivering one of the best performances in program history. In Friday’s preliminaries, she ran a personal-best and school-record 4:49.67, shattering the previous school mark by nearly four seconds and earning a spot in Saturday’s state final. She followed that effort with another outstanding race in the finals, crossing the line in 4:51.15 to finish 10th overall in California.

Freshman pole vaulter Sasha Strem also made an impressive debut on the state stage. After advancing through the preliminaries with a clearance of 11 feet, 2 inches, Strem returned in the finals and cleared 11 feet, 4 inches to finish among California’s top competitors. Her state appearance comes on the heels of a historic postseason that included a runner-up finish at the San Diego Section Championships and a San Diego freshman record clearance of 12 feet, 2 inches.

Senior Nathan Wilber closed out his Cathedral Catholic career by competing in the state championship 3200 meters. He walked at graduation at 9 am and ran in Fresno that night. Wilber posted a time of 9:28.41, finishing 21st in the state. While the performance fell short of his personal best, it marked the conclusion of an exceptional senior season that included standout performances in both cross country and track & field.

From a record-breaking junior, to a history-making freshman, to a decorated senior leader, the Dons once again demonstrated their strength on California’s biggest stage. Congratulations to Grace, Sasha, and Nathan on representing Cathedral Catholic with pride at the CIF State Championships.
