The Cathedral Catholic Girls’ Tennis team started their 2026 season in an impressive manner by beating a strong Bishop’s team with a score of 11-7 on Monday, August 24.

The Dons showed early that youth and experience can combine powerfully. With just one senior on the roster, Cathedral Catholic leaned on a talented group of underclassmen—including four freshmen who stepped up to win important points in a competitive matchup.

Grace Gazzo ’27, the only senior on the team, led the way by playing doubles with freshman Victoria Miyamoto ’30, and they won both of their matches 6-3 and 6-0, respectively.

In singles, Sophia Miyamoto ‘28 secured one win, defeating her opponent 6-2, and the freshmen Riley Blake ‘30 and Elizabeth Klein ‘30 each won some important matches. Blake won two games, scoring 7-5 and 6-1, and Klein won with a score of 6-4.

The Dons were especially strong in doubles, where the Cathedral Catholic teams went 7-2.

Samantha Rich ‘28 and Muhe Chen ‘30 went 2-0 with wins of 6-3 and 6-3, while Marisa Eiguren ‘28 and Peyton Suiter ‘29 also went undefeated, winning 6-3 and 6-0.

Sutton Kalklosch ‘29 and Brooke Yablonicky ‘28 added another victory, winning their match 6-3.

With a roster filled with young talent, Monday’s win sent an early statement from a Cathedral Catholic team playing with confidence and embracing the opportunity to compete at a high level.

The Dons’ youth was on full display, but so was their composure. Against a strong Bishop’s squad, Cathedral Catholic consistently came through when it mattered most.

The season is just getting started, and this young Dons team has already shown plenty of promise.
