Wolfgang Wood named as New Cathedral Catholic High School Basketball Coach

Cathedral Catholic High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Wolfgang Wood as head coach of the varsity boys basketball program.

Wood brings a strong record of success along with high-level playing and coaching experience. Most recently, he served as head coach at St. Bonaventure High School from 2020 to 2026, compiling a 115–66 overall record. During his tenure, his teams earned three Tri-Valley League titles, reached three CIF-SS Finals and advanced to a CIF Regional Final. He was named Tri-Valley League Coach of the Year three times and Ventura County Coach of the Year once. His program also set a school record with 26 wins in a single season.

Prior to his time at St. Bonaventure, Wood was a varsity assistant at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where he contributed to a CIF-SS Division I championship in 2018–2019, and served as an assistant coach at Newbury Park High School.

A 2012 graduate of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Wood was an All-CIF selection and a two-time All-Trinity League player. He went on to play four years of collegiate basketball, earning two All-Conference selections and CALPAC Conference Freshman of the Year honors. He is a graduate of California Lutheran University.

Wood comes from a distinguished basketball family. His father, Leon Wood, was a first-round NBA Draft pick, 1984 Olympic gold medalist and eight-year NBA veteran who currently serves as an NBA referee. His mother, Tia Francis, was a two-time All-CIF selection and Coca-Cola Player of the Year at Mira Mesa High School before playing at UCLA. His sister, Whitney Wood, was a two-time CIF Player of the Year at Santa Margarita and later played at Seton Hall University.

Wood and his wife, Marykate, join the Dons community as he begins preparing the program for the upcoming season. He will be a full-time employee as a teacher and coach.
