Sailing Team Delivers Several Solid Performances
The Cathedral Catholic High School sailing team has been making waves at recent regattas, competing against top high school teams across the state and the nation. With a mix of experienced sailors and up-and-coming talent, the Dons have demonstrated awesome teamwork in a variety of conditions over the past few weeks. Here’s a recap of their past three performances:

PCISA Women’s Invitational at Mission Bay Yacht Club (Oct 19-20)
The Dons sailing team proudly competed in the 2024 ISSA-PCISA National All Girls Invitational this past weekend, hosted at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. The regatta saw participation from 29 teams nationwide, making for an exciting two-day event. Light winds on Saturday challenged the sailors, but a fresh breeze on Sunday provided better conditions for racing.
- A Team: Carlin Fretwell ’26 and Charlie Corney ’26 achieved multiple top-10 finishes throughout the weekend, showcasing their technical skill and grit.
- B Team: Lauren Grace MacVaugh-Howe ’27, Keris Perry ’28, and Reagan Joy Griffith ’28 gained valuable experience as a young team, enjoying the camaraderie and learning from the competition.
The team had an excellent weekend overall, and the invitational served as an important stepping stone for these talented young athletes.

PCISA Sea Otter Regatta at Monterey (Oct 12-13)
At the Sea Otter Regatta in Monterey, the Dons varsity sailors faced light and shifty conditions, with a bit of fog and sea life adding to the challenge. Despite these obstacles, the Dons rose to the occasion, with two teams representing the school in the 64-team field.
- Dons Team 1: Owen Fretwell ’26, Carlin Fretwell ’26, William ‘Liam’ Kaseburg ’26, and Charlie Corney ’26 navigated their way to an impressive 10th place finish in the Gold Fleet, proving their strength in difficult conditions.
- Dons Team 2: Featuring Sean Kaseburg ’28, Lauren Grace MacVaugh-Howe ’27, Bennett Simpson ’26, Sean Getty ’26, Enzo Loth ’25, and Timothy Smith ’28, this young team had a fantastic experience, marking the first high school regatta for several freshman sailors.
The Sea Otter Regatta was a valuable learning experience for all participants and demonstrated the depth of talent within the Dons’ sailing program.

PCISA Keelboat Qualifier at San Diego Yacht Club (Sep 28-29)
The Dons competed in the 2024 PCISA Keelboat Challenge at the San Diego Yacht Club, where they faced tough, shifty conditions aboard the J22 keelboats. After a demanding six-hour day of racing, the Dons finished in 7th place.

While the Dons put up a strong fight, congratulations went to their friends at Point Loma High School for qualifying for nationals.
As the season progresses, the Cathedral Catholic sailing team continues to demonstrate their strength and sportsmanship in each event. With promising young sailors and seasoned athletes leading the way, the Dons are poised for continued success in the competitive sailing scene.
