2023-24 All CIF Winter Selections
Congratulations to the 6 Cathedral Catholic athletes who were named to their respective All-CIF teams for their outstanding efforts during their winter sports season. Cathedral had multiple athletes named to first and second teams, representing the best in the county in their sport.
Leading the way was inline hockey star Matthew Matsuda ’24, who was named CIF Metro Athlete of the Year. Matsuda had a fantastic year, leading his team to the semifinals where they lost in overtime by one to the eventual champions. He was a key member of the team last year that won CIF Metro last year for the first time. As team captain, Matsuda played in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey league on the San Diego Central Jets. The Central Jets won the California State High School Championship and won three games at the National High School Championships in Pennsylvania, before losing in the quarterfinals. He will be playing for Wausau Cyclones of the NA3HL (one of the top Junior Leagues in North America) next year.
Sean Magtoto ’24 had an outstanding season for the wrestling program. He had a great preseason where he won three different tournaments in the 190 weight class, earning Upperweight Outstanding Wrestler at the Desert Nightmare event. He was team captain and MVP for the Dons and would earn All-Eastern League Player of the Year winning the 190lb division. He took that momentum into the CIF competition where he became the 190lb champion and qualified for the state playoff. Magtoto is also a very accomplished lacrosse player and will play lacrosse for The Ohio State University next year.
