Cathedral Catholic Crew Teams Head to Boston for Head of the Charles Regatta



Cathedral Catholic High School’s Crew Teams are gearing up for an exciting weekend of competition at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 18-20. This renowned event, the largest rowing regatta in the world, draws top rowers from around the globe, and Cathedral Catholic  is proud to have both its Girls and Boys teams competing.
 

Girls Team: Returning for Another Shot at Glory

The Cathedral Catholic Girls Crew team will be racing in the COXED QUAD event, with four rowers, each handling two oars, and a coxswain to steer and coordinate the boat. This year’s lineup includes: Gabriela Serena, Audrey Crow, Misato (Mimi) Earley, Julia Lopez, Mia Stewart (coxswain)

Gabriela Serena and Audrey Crow competed in last year’s Head of the Charles and are eager to return for another shot at victory. This incredible opportunity marks a milestone for the entire team, and the girls have been working tirelessly to prepare.

“We’re thrilled to be heading back to Boston,” said Coach Glenn Schweighardt, the Girls Crew Coach. “The Head of the Charles is an amazing experience, and our girls are ready to give it their all on the world stage.”
 

Boys Team: A Strong Lineup for Cathedral’s Second HOCR Appearance

The Boys Crew team, led by Coach Jeff Kiser, is making its second appearance at the Head of the Charles, this time racing in the highly competitive YOUTH 8+ category. The boys’ boat includes: Sabrina Calderon (3rd year), Jacob MacNab (4th year, Captain), Preston Welch (4th year, Captain), Liam Steele (3rd year), Nicholas Roberts (3rd year), Gustavo Serena (4th year), Riley Fiedler (4th year), Kade Miles (2nd year), Diego Sanchez (4th year)

With most of these rowers having experience in major competitions, including the Scholastic National Championships, the boys are determined to make a mark in their first attempt at racing an eight.

“We have a veteran crew, and we’re hoping to make the cut in this very competitive event,” said Coach Kiser. “The boys have been working incredibly hard, and this is a fantastic opportunity to compete against some of the best rowers in the world.”

Founded in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta is one of the most prestigious rowing events in the world, held annually on the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The regatta features a 3-mile head race format, where boats race against the clock in timed intervals. Rowers of all skill levels—from elite athletes to amateurs—compete, representing clubs, universities, and organizations from across the globe.
