Gary Remiker ‘90: A Historic Milestone for Cathedral Catholic Baseball

With his 549th career victory, Gary Remiker has officially passed legendary coach Dick Serrano for the most wins in the history of the University of San Diego High School and Cathedral Catholic High School. He now sits alone atop one of California’s most storied high school baseball programs.

The milestone is especially meaningful because Remiker has achieved it at his alma mater, where he played as a pitcher and catcher under Dick Serrano. In 1990, his senior year, he was named first-team All-Western League and, most notably, San Diego Union-Tribune’s All-Academic Team Captain for baseball in all of San Diego. After high school, Remiker earned his undergraduate degree at UCSD.  He took over the program in 2001 after assisting Coach Serrano in the program from 1996 to 2000. He has since spent the past 26 seasons building Cathedral Catholic into one of the nation’s premier high school baseball programs.

Through the 2026 season (as of May 13), Remiker owns an extraordinary 549-260 record, good for a .679 winning percentage. His teams have captured eight CIF San Diego Section championships and 12 league titles, and have consistently competed with the best programs in California. He now ranks among the top 10 winningest coaches in San Diego Section history (top 3 amongst active coaches). The 2026 Dons are continuing that tradition with a 22-4 record and are ranked No. 1 in San Diego and No. 6 in California.

While Remiker’s name is now etched in the record books, he quickly attributes the program’s success to a crucial partnership. Since 2001, Rob Reiter ‘92, a longtime assistant coach and fellow alumnus, has served as his trusted pitching coach and partner. Together, they teach (Reiter in Social Studies and Remiker in Math) and have built a program known for excellence and consistency. They remain dedicated to developing young men on and off the field. A testament to those relationships formed over the years is that many alumni, including Patrick Justiniano ‘86, Parker Hipp ‘09, and Ryan Wiegand ‘05, have returned to help coach, among others.

Their impact extends far beyond wins and championships in high school. Remiker and Reiter have mentored a remarkable list of future professional athletes, both as assistants under Dick Serrano and as program heads. The alumni list includes Brady Aiken ‘14, Nick Nastrini ‘18, John Cresto ‘15, Stephen Gonsalves ‘13, Alex Schick ‘13, Daniel Camarena ‘11, Matthew Moynihan ‘09, Barry Zito ‘96, Mark Prior ‘98, Tyler Gaffney ‘09, and Carlos Quentin ‘00, among others.

Excellence under Remiker extends to the classroom as well. The program has long emphasized that academic achievement is as important as athletic success. The 2026 team provides a powerful example: 11 of the 23 players carry a GPA of 4.0 or higher, 13 have earned college scholarships, and three are headed to Ivy League institutions. Over his 26 seasons at the helm, more than 125 athletes have gone on to play college baseball.

Remiker’s coaching career has been recognized statewide and nationally. He was named the American Baseball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year in 2009, earned Cal-Hi Sports State Coach of the Year honors in 2011 and 2016, and was inducted into the San Diego County Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2024. Reiter was also inducted into the California Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2025.

From championship celebrations to the classroom, Gary Remiker and Rob Reiter have shaped generations of student-athletes. As Remiker surpasses his former coach and mentor, Dick Serrano, to become the winningest coach in USDHS/Cathedral Catholic baseball history, his legacy is measured not only by victories but also by the standards of excellence and mentorship that have defined Cathedral Catholic baseball for more than two decades.
