The Cathedral Catholic girls flag football team is off to a perfect 2-0 start after opening the 2026 season with a pair of impressive victories, including a dramatic overtime comeback against Mt. Carmel.

The Dons opened the season on Aug. 11 with a dominant 27-6 victory over Grossmont, setting the tone with a stellar defensive performance. The defense came away with five interceptions, as Larissa Olivas ‘27, Ellie Westerheide ‘28, Sabrina Jutronich ‘28, Khloe Lopez ‘28 and Charlotte Kolk ‘30 each recorded a pick.

On offense, quarterback Emma Weeks ‘27 found the end zone once. Jutronich ‘28 also made an impact, carrying the ball five times for 51 yards and scoring both a rushing and receiving touchdown.

The Dons’ success extended throughout the program. The JV team also earned a shutout, defeating Grossmont 12-0 for a two-win day for Cathedral.

Two days later, the Dons faced Mt. Carmel and delivered a thrilling 19-13 overtime victory.

The Dons trailed late before Anna Janis ‘28 came up with a game-changing interception returned for a touchdown, tying the game and sending it to overtime. Jutronich then scored the game-winning touchdown to secure the 19-13 victory and send the Dons home with a 2-0 record.

Weeks led the offense with 18 completions for 122 yards and a touchdown. Jutronich added 43 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, while Emma Valdivia ’27 hauled in five receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown.

The defense once again came up big. Janis recorded 11 flag pulls, and her late pick-six proved to be the turning point. Defensive rusher Maddie Modic ’27 recorded five sacks, while Westerheide, Lopez and Janis each added an interception.

After two games, the Dons have shown they can win in different ways. They have combined a suffocating defense with timely offensive plays and a clutch mentality in critical moments.

Cathedral Catholic is now 2-0 on the young season and will look to keep that momentum rolling next week vs Ramona.
