Girls Track Wins CIF Championship
The Cathedral Catholic Track & Field program delivered one of its most memorable performances of the season at the CIF San Diego Section Division II Championships on Saturday, May 16th, at University City, highlighted by a dominant team title for the girls’ squad and a series of record-breaking efforts on the track and in the field.
The ladies captured the CIF Division II Championship in commanding fashion, scoring more than double the total of the second-place team. From sprints to distance events to field events, Cathedral Catholic showcased remarkable depth, adding another championship trophy to an already outstanding athletic year.
Cathedral Catholic wasted no time making its mark at the meet. Kaellyn Peart won the 100-meter dash with a personal best and later added a runner-up finish in the 200 meters. Anna Wilson followed with a CIF title in the 400 meters and placed third in the 200, helping the Lady Dons pile up valuable points in the sprint events.
The distance crew carried the momentum. Grace Keefe delivered one of the day’s top performances, winning both the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters. Her 1600 title came in a personal best, and teammate Liesel Sellerberg finished second to give Cathedral Catholic a dominant 1-2 finish. Sellerberg also placed fourth in the 800 meters, while Callie Schulteis posted a personal-best time to finish sixth in the 3200 meters.
In the hurdles, Emily MacDonald captured the 300-meter hurdles title with a personal best and later qualified as an alternate in the 100-meter hurdles. Abby Rall added another podium finish, taking third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time.
The Lady Dons were equally impressive in the field events. Kyla O’Donnell won the triple jump with a season-best mark and finished second in the long jump. Camille Tarle claimed the discus championship with a personal-best throw. In the pole vault, Aleksandra Strem earned runner-up honors, while Maddie Brown placed fourth and Dottie Woods finished sixth, both with personal-best clearances.
Cathedral Catholic also earned key relay points. The girls’ 4×400 relay team (Liesel Sellerberg, Kristine Bickler, Natalie McCormack, Anna Wilson) finished third, adding to the team’s overwhelming point total and helping secure the championship.
The boys’ team delivered several standout performances of its own. Zander Wallace won the 400 meters and moved to No. 2 on Cathedral Catholic’s all-time list. Wallace later returned to anchor the boys’ 4×400 relay team, consisting of Wesley Utz, Gavin Armstrong, and Jake Bevilacqua, to a third-place finish.
One of the meet’s most exciting moments came in the pole vault, where Aiden Angeles cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to finish second and break the Cathedral Catholic school record. The boys’ 4×800 relay team of Eduardo Flores, Gavin Armstrong, Freddy Derheimer, and Jack Jennings finished fifth.
The outstanding performances led to a large contingent of Dons qualifying for next week’s CIF San Diego Section Championships, where Cathedral Catholic will aim to build on its momentum and continue its exceptional postseason.
